Baseball roundup: Othello heads to 2A semis

By the Herald staff

YAKIMA -- Marc Garza led Othello to the 2A state baseball semifinals Saturday, tossing a complete-game victory in a 6-4 first-round win over Cheney and then driving in seven runs in a 9-4 quarterfinal win over Pullman at Davis High School.

Garza went 3-for-4 with pair of home runs -- one of them a grand slam -- against Pulllman and scattered three hits against Cheney.

Lee Gomez and Jakob Scott combined for four hits and three runs for the Huskies in the quarterfinal win.

Class 3A regionals: Mount Rainier 11, Hanford 3

YAKIMA -- Hanford scored three runs in the top of the third to tie its game with Mount Rainier, but the Rams answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back en route to a win over the Falcons in a state-tournament, first-round game at Parker Field.

"We made some things happen. Got two guys on base, stole some bases ... got ourselves right back in the game," Hanford coach Tom DeWitz said of the third inning rally. "(The four runs Mt. Rainier scored in the third) were all unearned. We made an error and they capitalized."

Travis Chalk led Hanford with two hits.

Class 1A regionals: River View splits

MOSES LAKE -- River View's season came to a screaming halt, literally, with an 8-3 loss to Naches Valley in the 1A state quarterfinals.

Panthers slugger Nate Remillard hit a ball out of the park with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but dislocated his right knee in the batters box and wound up being called out when he was unable to get around the bases.

Coach Brian Eisenbarth said Remillard was taken to the hospital -- his knee later popped back in on its own -- and the game finally concluded after an hour delay. Eisenbarth said Remillard was willing to have the Naches players carry him around the bases -- la Central Washington softball -- but the Rangers declined.

Earlier, River View beat Okanogan 8-5 in 10 innings, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Remillard and Tyler Burnett.
