Oregon couple killed in wreck at Boardman

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer May 21, 2009

A couple from Monmouth, Ore., were killed Tuesday when the truck they were in rolled off Intestate 84 near Boardman, authorities said.

Joanne Marie McDowell, 67, and her husband, Michael Wayne McDowell, 64, both died at the scene.

An Oregon State Police trooper witnessed the crash, which occurred at 5 p.m. about 10 miles west of Boardman, said OSP Sgt. Bob Cannon.

The trooper was on I-84 and spotted a large dust cloud on the side of the freeway in the patrol car's rearview mirror.

Joanne McDowell was driving a 2008 Ford F350 truck east on I-84 when it drifted into the center median, Cannon said. Witnesses reported seeing her try to bring it back onto the highway, but she over-corrected and the truck drove across the eastbound lanes onto the shoulder.

The truck rolled at least once, before stopping on its wheels about 60 feet from the freeway, Cannon said.

Joanne McDowell was thrown from the truck, while her husband stayed inside, he said. Both were wearing seat belts.
