WSU Athletic Foundation swings into action

There's a buzz in the Palouse right now with school letting out and the baseball team still in the hunt for the Pac-10 title and a postseason berth.

Funding for athletics is a tough issue these days. However, next week, the Washington State University Athletic Foundation begins its Cougar Golf Classic series.

Second in the series of 11 is the 2009 Broadmoor RV/SunWest Sportswear Tri-Cities Cougar Golf Classic is set for Saturday, May 16 at Canyon Lakes.

The list of coaches and staff who are scheduled to be at the Tri-Cities Cougar Golf Classic include athletic director Jim Sterk, head football coach Paul Wulff, assistant football coaches Mike Levenseller and Todd Sturdy, assistant women's basketball coach Mike Daugherty, tennis coach Lisa Hart and volleyball coach Andrew Palileo. There also are plans to have some WSU student/athletes involved in the event.

Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by the shotgun start at 1 p.m. The individual player fee is $125, which includes the social hour/dinner/evening program. If you can only make the dinner, it's $25. There are other levels of sponsorship. I'd be willing to wager an adult beverage that Debi Caldwell of SunWest Sportswear in Richland will be in attendance and will enjoy the evening.

On June 12, there's the return of the Broadmoor RV/Towne Crier Tri-Cities Tailgate at TRAC. It will mark the 12th anniversary of Mark Schuster's party in Pasco.

For more information on any of the events or the WSU Athletic Foundation, contact Lori Olson at 509-358-7541.

In the interest of fair play, the University of Washington Coaches Tour includes seven golf events. Yakima is the closest Husky coaches will come to the Tri-Cities. That event is June 1.
