Tennis notebook: SCAC East Invite to feature top matchups

By Rocky Morrow, Herald staff writer

The third SCAC East Varsity Invite will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the new Kiona-Benton courts, and Bears coach Rick Harding is excited about the opportunity for Ki-Be to hold the tourney.

"We built new tennis courts this year with the remodel," Harding said. "We get to practice more and play more, we're hosting this invite and districts, so it has been a pretty good deal for tennis at Ki-Be."

And it's not just the move "from city parks to school courts" that has Harding optimistic.

"My No. 1 girls doubles team, Michaela Schroeder and Chelsie Elliott is my best group so far," he said. "They played together last year and are making progress."

Harding also said his No. 1 boys doubles team of Charles McClammer and Ethan Clouse has "made steady progress over the last year."

Columbia (Burbank) coach J.J. Calzadillas is definitely looking forward to the invite.

"(It) will put us head-to-head with our whole entire league. We split for traveling purposes, and now we'll play Royal, Connell and Ki-Be and the other side will be at Sunnyside."

Calzadillas said that while his boys team is solid, especially No. 1 duo Trent Erikson and Trevor Morrison, he's still piecing together the definitive girls lineup for the Coyotes.

"We've just thrown some girls in there from time to time," he said. "We're not really set in the the singles department yet. We've thrown a freshman, Sydney Erikson, in there and a senior, Mary Lou Lopez."
