Names of students who have made the Scholastic Honor Roll winter term have been announced by Oregon State University. To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work.
Dayton -- 3.5 or better: Amber M. Steinhoff, sophomore, natural resources.
Kennewick -- straight-A average: Torri E. Rinker, senior, bioengineering; 3.5 or better: Ashleigh E. Hess, senior, mathematics.
Richland -- 3.5 or better: Sean T. Hall, junior, history.
Walla Walla -- straight-A average: Sheila J. Thurber, sophomore, biology; 3.5 or better: Christy L. Turner, sophomore, applied visual arts.

Sophomore initiation is going on at Richland's Columbia High School, which means a lot of things will be backwards. In the class of 468, boys have to wear boy ties and shirts backwards and roll their trouser legs up to the knees. Girls will have to be done up in pigtails and have dresses on backwards.

WAITSBURG -- For many sports-loving families, Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without football.
The Bartlow family of Waitsburg tried to avoid football talk that day. But it was tough to do because Jeff Bartlow is the Waitsburg-Prescott head coach, and his older son, Zach, starts at quarterback and free safety.
Plus, two days later, the Bartlows faced a daunting task: getting past Colfax in the Class 2B state semifinals. The Bulldogs knocked the Cardinals out of the state playoffs the past two seasons -- last year in the semis.

EWU'S Mitchell wins Walter Payton Award
FRISCO, Texas -- Eastern Washington quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell won the Walter Payton Award on Friday night as top player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Mitchell, who led the Eagles to the national championship a year ago, received 57 first-place votes and 453 points from a national panel of 131 voters.
Lehigh quarterback Chris Lum and Indiana State running back Shakir Bell tied for second with 219 points.
