The state championships return to the Mid-Columbia this spring after a five-year hiatus.
The 4As will be held at Canyon Lakes (boys) and Sun Willows (girls), with the 3As at Meadow Springs (boys) and Horn Rapids (girls), the 1As at Columbia Point and the 2B/1Bs at Tri-City Country Club. Only the 2As are out of town -- at Apple Tree in Yakima.
Boys
Hanford again is the cream of the crop in the Mid-Columbia, returning three state placers from a year ago -- including All-Area MVP Josh Harvey, who won the regional title and was 28th at state.
Walla Walla will give the Falcons a run, bringing back three All-Area selections, including CBL 4A Player of the Year Drew Reinland. Kamiakin won Friday's Kennewick Invitational led by seniors Rick Gleed, a state qualifier two years ago for Moses Lake, and Riley Hayfield.
Southridge has senior Justin Sprengel, who won the season-opening Pasco Invite, and state qualifier Max Dreisbach, and Pasco returns junior Saul Martinez and adds his younger brother Sampson.
Othello, hoping to repeat as CWAC dual-meet champion, returns all 11 golfers from a year ago, including state qualifiers Sam Para and Jared Kummer.
Girls
With Pasco graduating All-Area MVP Kelsey Johnson and EWU signee Neddy Martinez, the way is clear for Richland to dominate the CBBN this season.
A surprise challenger could be Davis, which returns three second-team All-CBL 4A honorees. Others to watch include Hanford's Erin Fardell, Walla Walla's Paige Blackburn and Southridge's Lauren Goetz and Destiny Brito.
Othello senior Ashley Amoruso -- who led the Huskies to the CWAC district title a year ago -- Warden senior Kim McPartland and Royal senior Shelby Forester are among the top small-school golfers in the area.

OK, it's cold out. But there's still a lot going on in Mid-Columbia sports during these winter months.
For example, the Tri-Cities Sports Council met last week with a number of items being discussed.

Looking at the times of Mid-Columbia swimmers less than a week into the season, one might think the girls state championships in Federal Way were just around the corner, not two months away.
At Saturday's Eastern Washington Jamboree in Prosser, Hailey Rankin of the host Mustangs swam the 100-yard butterfly in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 2.32 seconds.
That night, more state qualifiers rolled in at the Richland Twilight Jamboree. Hanford senior Melissa Merrill qualified on her own in the 50 freestyle, then helped the Falcons achieve state-qualifying times in the 400 free and 200 medley relays.
