Benton County commissioners should select a new District Court judge during next Monday's meeting at the county courthouse in Prosser.
A panel winnowed the field of 13 candidates who applied to three: Benton County Prosecutor Ryan Brown, Benton County Court Commissioner Joe Burrows and former part-time County Court Commissioner Katie Butler.
On Monday, the three candidates should each deliver a five-minute speech to the commissioners, who will then ask each candidate questions for about five minutes.
The commissioners expect to name a new judge after the interviews Monday.

That will wait until toxicology results are available, but the manner of death is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Benton County Coroner John Staples.
Staples, 77, was found dead on his patio Monday afternoon, and a .38-caliber revolver was found at his Greenbrook Avenue home in Richland.

Staff find savior budget item for cash-starved drug courts
Benton County commissioners may have found a way to keep cash-starved adult and juvenile drug court programs from expiring at the end of this year.
A stash of several hundred thousand dollars set aside as elections account reserve for 2012 won't be needed and could be available, said Keith Mercer, the county's finance manager.
Discovery of the cache came unexpectedly after county court administrators, a judge, a prosecutor and a police chief lobbied county commissioners Tuesday morning to keep the drug court programs alive in 2012.
Benton Fire District 3: Sherman
Benton Fire District 3: Sherman

Gerry has been attending yearly Washington State Fire Commissioner Association, Washington State Fire Chief's Association and Washington Finance Officers Association conferences to keep up to date on ever-changing board and fire department issues. Gerry's previous board member experience and 12 years as district secretary for Benton Co. District 6 make him, in my opinion, the best candidate for fire commissioner.
Recently, the Benton County commissioners were asked to choose a person to fill a vacant commissioner position on Benton County Fire District 3 Board. Three applicants interviewed and Gerry Sherman was appointed to fill the position by the

Court Commissioner Lonna Malone resigns after 17 years
Court Commissioner Lonna K. Malone has resigned from her position after 17 years on the Benton-Franklin Superior Court bench.
The Richland woman, who turns 62 next month, said she left on her own terms, and now looks forward to doing volunteer work, enjoying the outdoors and spending more time with family and friends.
"It was for my own well-being, physically and emotionally, after 17 years on the bench," Malone told the Herald. "The well-being part is important, especially when you get to be my age. ... I needed to take better care of myself and so this is one way that I'm going to do that."
