Liberty Christian boys place fifth in 2B state

By the Herald staff and news services

SPOKANE -- Mark Wilson scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Liberty Christian held off North Beach 59-53 for fifth place in the Class 2B state tournament Saturday.

"They were definitely game," LC coach Terry Watson said of North Beach (17-8). "But when we scooted we had our way."

Wilson finished with 615 points for the season (22.8 ppg) and was named to the all-tournament second team. He was one of six seniors on the squad, along with Derek Stratton (16 points, seven boards and three assists) and Joey Lane (14 rebounds).

"I'm proud of them. It's been a long, tough season," said Watson, whose team placed fifth at state for the second straight year. "They did a lot of good things, and they were determined to get some hardware. Losing six seniors is going to be tough."

Liberty Christian held a 52-47 lead with 2:36 remaining but North Beach responded with a 6-0 run. The Patriots quickly regained their composure as James Davis scored five points during a 7-0 LC run to close out the game.

Russell Alfaro led three North Beach players in double-figures with 16 points.
