I am not one to try to use my misfortune of having cancer to my advantage, but I have found an occasional benefit to my condition.
A couple of weeks ago, I was home after a chemotherapy session when the doorbell rang. It was some guy selling home security systems. He started in on his spiel, but I stopped him mid-sentence:
"Sorry, man. I had chemotherapy yesterday. I really can't stand here and talk to you."
Seeing as I have no hair on my head and I looked beat, he took it as more than an excuse. He backed away from the door as quickly as possible, apologizing to me profusely all the way back to his car.
Didn't mean to make him feel bad, but I really was in no mood.

Thank you Jeff Czmowski for having the paper at our front door every day, year round and especially when you have to track through the freezing temperatures, wind, snow and ice. It is so nice not to have to go any further than opening the door and there it is, the paper!

For some unknown reason, everyone seems to think the yellow school bus is an entitlement for all the students. Its original intention was for the school children who lived several miles from schools. It was never for door-to-door service, especially when the parents are home and have two cars in the driveway. Somehow the service has lost its original intention.
I do think we can still keep the buses but use them sparingly for the children who live more than a mile from the school. Use them at particular stops and make the kids walk a couple of blocks to catch them -- not at every corner in housing tracts. And absolutely no door-to-door stops. The fuel for stopping a bus increases ten-fold and the wear and tear costs go up.
Keep the school buses, lose the extra stops. Save money.

Once again, Franklin County is asking voters for a new jail. The economy is tough and each time the voters have turned it down. After all, everyone is making due, and why put more money into criminals?
Unfortunately, this is far deeper than just "the criminals." Besides housing more than double its original intended use, the jail has been subjected to over 30 years of wear and tear, along with the outright abuse inflicted by inmates.
As you sit in the safety of your home, think of the officers who have to "make due" daily to keep you safe. At times there can be 10 or more inmates in a room and one officer at the door. Help, if he needs it, is on the other side of the building, three security doors away. Inmates sabotage locks and doors on a daily basis, and it's far easier to do it on 30-year-old locks. That's only the beginning. The outdated intake and booking area create increased safety issues for both the arresting and intake officers.
