Boys roundup: Burbank, Liberty Christian fall in state openers

YAKIMA -- Columbia-Burbank tried to rally late, hitting five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, before falling to Lake Roosevelt 61-56 for its fourth first-round loss in as many state appearances.

Jordan Rada and Nick Byrd combined for 43 points for Burbank, but Raiders guard Edward Wolfe exploded for 25 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.

"We did well, but we know we have to get back," said Coyotes coach DJ Traver. "With the shooters we have, 11 points down with 41/2 minutes left, we've always got a chance."

Burbank (12-12) plays Ilwaco (16-9) at 10:30 a.m. today in the consolation bracket. Lake Roosevelt (15-7) will play Vashon (22-1) at 5:30 p.m. for a berth in the semifinals.

"We wanted to run our offense, and they like to get in a fast-break mode," said Rada, who led the Coyotes with 23 points and 13 rebounds. "I think we started hitting our shots a little too late."

Burbank shot just 7-for-26 (27 percent) in the first half before finishing 22-for-61 (36 percent) for the game. Meanwhile, the Raiders shot a torrid 14-of-23 in the second half.Wolfe led the way after hitting just 2-of-8 shots in the first half, connecting for 6-of-11 in the second.

2B boys: Davenport 63, Liberty Christian 50

SPOKANE -- Taylor Morgan scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Davenport over Liberty Christian in the first round.

Davenport (18-7) had a successful return to the state tournament, making its first state tournament appearance since 1985.

Jarod Gunning added 18 points and a game-high six assists for the Gorillas. The Gorillas trailed 32-29 at halftime but roared back with a 13-3 third quarter. They outrebounded the Patriots 39-33 and shot 43.5 percent.

Mark Wilson led all scorers with 23 points for the Patriots. Teammate Joey Lane added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

LaConner 58, Lind-Ritzville 45

Jeremy Vander Lei led three players in double figures as LaConner beat Lind-Ritzville in the first round.

The game was knotted at 21 at halftime but LaConner pulled away by outscoring the Broncos 37-24 in the second-half.

Brandon Willey added 15 points and Erik Lindeman finished with 11 for LaConner (13-6). The Braves made 44 percent of their shots on 20-of-45 shooting.

Cory Whitmore scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Lind-Ritzville (16-11). The Broncos made only two field-goals in the last four minutes of the game.
