RICHLAND -- Under the lights at George Prout Pool, several state-qualifying times were recorded during the Richland Twilight Jamboree.
Hanford senior Melissa Merrill clocked in at 25.40 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. She also competed in the 400 freestyle relay (3 minutes, 43.99 seconds) and 200 medley relay (1:57.90).
Merrill, junior Stephanie Tixier and sophomore Lisa Tixier were on Hanford's 400 free and 200 medley relay teams. They were joined by Mylie Oberg in the 400 free and sophomore Taylor Fievez in the 200 medley.

Othello senior Natilee Ruiz got a pair of Class 2A district records on the first day of the District 5/6/7 swimming championships in Ellensburg.
Ruiz entered Friday as the district-record holder in the 50-yard freestyle, 200 free, 500 free and 100 backstroke. She added her name to the record books in the 100 free (54.85 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 11.85 seconds).
Prosser junior Hailey Rankin broke former teammate Mackenzie Gant's district record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.96. Rankin also achieved a state-qualifying time of 5:35.79 in the 500 free. But her district record in the 100 breaststroke fell when Ellensburg freshman Taylor Wilson clocked in at 1:09.68.

KENNEWICK It's Kamiakin's world; everyone else is just running in it.
In terms of the Mid-Columbia cross country scene, that's an apt description of this last fall season.
The Braves boys and girls not only dominated league meets -- at times placing their full squad of seven in the top 10 -- they performed well at the big races and brought home a bounty of state hardware.

KENNEWICK -- The Kamiakin, Southridge and Hanford gymnastics teams along with Richland junior and 2011 state 4A gymnastics veteran Carly Garland, the sole tumbler for the Bombers, will compete in the CBBN district championships at 6 p.m. today at Garland's Gym in Kennewick.
And it should prove an interesting battle between reigning 3A state champion Kamiakin and a strong Southridge squad.
The Braves boast a roster with four 2011 state 3A veterans: juniors Michelle Fletcher, Jessica Anderson, and Brittany Lofton as well as sophomore Danielle Brandon. Also bringing it for the Braves will be junior Sarah Rowell.

RICHLAND -- The sport of running will never rival the likes of football for attention.
Tonight's football game between Kennewick and Kamiakin high schools figures to fill up the 6,800-seat Lampson Stadium.
The Richland Invite -- the area's biggest regular-season cross country meet -- likely will draw several hundred spectators, mostly family and friends. And even the all-classes state event at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco can't compete with a regular-season showdown between city rivals.
