Southridge's Garza breezes into state wrestling semifinals

By Kevin Anthony, Herald staff writer

TACOMA -- It gets harder from here.

Both Ely Garza and his coach, Dave Brown, know that Day 2 of Mat Classic never goes as smoothly as Day 1. But if the Southridge junior keeps wrestling like this, it won't matter.

Garza, a two-time state placer, secured his third state medal Friday with a pair of easy wins, advancing to the semifinals of the 119-pound 4A bracket at the Tacoma Dome.

"He's wrestling as good as he ever has," Brown said after Garza's second-round pin in the quarterfinals. "He's using a real solid base and staying in good position."

Garza is one of three Tri-Cities wrestlers still alive at Mat Classic XXI, with Richland's Jacob Bieber (4A, 119) and Hanford's Caleb Gifford (3A, 135) also guaranteed state medals.

Bieber bounced back from a 2-0 first-round loss with 7-0 and 4-0 wins, dominating both matches.

"I had to tell myself I'm not here for a medal, I'm here to wrestle," said Bieber, who went 0-2 at state as a junior. "I'm excited to place. Now I need to make that medal look really good."

Three wrestlers had their state stays end in heartbreaking fashion.

First, Kamiakin sophomore Derrick Cooley led his 130 consolation match 4-3 after scoring a reversal with 18 seconds left, only to lose when his opponent reversed back in the final five seconds.

Then Richland sophomore Kyler Mars, who lost 4-3 in the quarterfinals, evened his loser-out match at 7-all with a takedown 30 seconds into the final period.

As he was cutting his opponent loose to go for another takedown, Mars was instead reversed to his back and pinned.

Finally, Kamiakin junior Sedale Garcia seemed to be headed to today's placing matches, leading 5-0 in his 119 consolation bout. But a series of stall calls in the second and third periods helped send the match into overtime.

Still, Garcia seemed to get a reprieve with a head-an-arm takedown. But he couldn't finish, and his opponent slipped out and behind for the victory.

Moses Lake, whose coach, Jamie Wise, was named 4A coach of the year, got off to a good start and was in second place after the first round. But the Chiefs won just one of their seven quarterfinal matches and saw their complement of 11 wrestlers whittled down to six.

Sam Villegas, who won a state title with Royal last year, is the only Moses Lake wrestler in the semis, rolling to 17-0 and 15-0 technical falls at 152.

Walla Walla's David Marquez (145) and Trey Haines (160) also are alive in the consolation rounds.

Gifford, a four seed, bounced back from a 6-2 loss in his opener with a dominating 17-4 win and injury default. Both he and Mike Ruane, who couldn't survive the 145 bracket, were making their second state trips.

I'm really glad I was able to come last year even though I went 0-2," Ruane said after his opening-round victory. "It's not like my eyes are huge this year."

Sunnyside advanced four wrestlers into the semifinals -- both Christian Reyes and Nathan Gonzalez at 103, returning state champ Steven Romero at 112 and Shawn Olivarez at 135 -- and has a shot to finish fourth for a team trophy.

Prosser brothers Irving and Osmar Jaimez are in the 2A semifinals at 103 and 119, respectively. Grandview's Santos Guillen also reached the 103 semifinals, while Othello's Reuben Lopez, a state runner-up at 130 last year, is on track to reach the finals at 135.

Meanwhile, Warden won 10 of its 15 first-round matches to take the early team lead, though state favorite Orting overtook the Cougars by the end of the day, 89.5 to 77.5.

"I'm just taking it one match at a time and hopefully I can get to the finals," said Pruneda, who has never wrestled in Saturday night's title matches.

Connell, which brought half as many wrestlers to state as Warden, advanced just as many to the semifinals, with five of the Eagles' seven still alive for titles, including both Hernan Serra and Freddy Herrera at 103 and Nato Orozco at 215.

There were no surprises among the team leaders, with Lake Stevens (4A), Enumclaw (3A), Deer Park (2A), Republic (2B/1B and Sedro-Woolley (girls) the Day 1 leaders.
