FEDERAL WAY -- Cody Roberts of Richland won his preliminary races Friday in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke, recording All-America times in both at the 4A boys state swimming championships at King County Aquatics Center.
"We had a spectacular day in the pool," Richland/Hanford coach Kathy Piper said, noting that Roberts' 100 fly time of 48.19 seconds missed the state record by five-hundredths of a second.
"I'm ecstatic with the way I swam," said Roberts, who went 50.91 in the 100 back.
And the senior has a simple strategy for competition today.
"I'm just going to go out there and swim my own race and not worry about anybody else."
Other Richland finalists are Tyler Pickett in the 200 IM (2:00.08) and 100 breast (1:01.99), Nathaniel Weinman (4:45.80) and Eric Blanchard (4:51.11) in the 500 free.
The Bombers team also seeded are second in the 200 medley relay (1:40.13) and fourth in the 400 free (3:17.52).
Moses Lake finalists include Miles Goodrich in the 200 free (1:46.23) and 500 free (4:48.35), and Sebastian Weber in the 100 fly (53.12).

Class 3A
Joe Wertz earned All-American consideration times and new Hanford school records, taking second in both the 200 IM (1:55.09) and 100 back (52.27) to highlight his showing in prelims.
But the highlight for him was the Falcons' fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:42.25) to earn a spot in today's finals.
"I'm definitely very pleased our 200 medley made it into the big finals, seeded fourth which is awesome," Wertz said.
Jeff Grindel qualified for finals in the 100 breast (1:02.80).
"We're excited and pumped for a big finale," Piper said.
