Mind-boggling acting makes 'Squid and the Whale' compelling

The Squid and the Whale is a difficult character study about a couple and a family with deep emotional problems that surface during a divorce.

It is loaded with exceptional performances anchored by Jeff DanielsÂ’ career best acting as an insufferable intellectual. He gets superb support from Laura Linney as a long-suffering wife and Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline who play the two kids.

This is one features several canÂ’t-figure-out why-they-were-Oscar-ignored performances.

The rest of the world, however, did notice and you should, too, as The Battelle Film Club opens the Spring series with knock it out of the park acting.

Mr. Movie rating: 5 stars

Rated R for mature themes, language. It plays Friday, Feb. 20 only at the Battelle Auditorium at 8 p.m.

5 stars to 4 1/2 stars: Must see on the big screen
4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.
3 stars to 2 1/2 stars: Wait until it comes out on video.
2 stars to 1 star: Don't bother.
0 stars: Speaks for itself.
