Heroin, gun, tools seized from Kennewick home

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

More than 100 grams of black tar heroin with a street value of about $12,000, a loaded gun and stolen power tools were seized when a Kennewick home was searched in connection with a burglary investigation, authorities said.

Michael Scott Smith, 48, and Leona Ann McKereghan, 45, both of Kennewick, were arrested, said Benton County Detective Lee Cantu.

Detectives were alerted to Smith by patrol deputies who suspected Smith was accepting stolen property from burglaries in exchange for drugs, Cantu said.

Detectives also were told Smith was dealing heroin.

The sheriff's officials searched Smith's home at 1319 W. Bruneau Ave. with the help of Tri-Cities Metro Drug Task Force, the Benton County Regional SWAT Team, U.S. marshals, Drug Enforcement Agency and the Kennewick Police Department.

Hand tools and power tools taken from a home shop burglary south of Richland reportedly were found during the search, along with power tools connected to a Kennewick burglary, Cantu said.

The loaded gun, heroin and three vehicles also were seized.

Smith was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of possessing stolen property, trafficking stolen property, possessing heroin with intent to deliver and possessing a gun.

McKereghan was jailed on suspicion of possessing heroin with intent to deliver.
