WALLA WALLA -- In tight swimming meets, it can be diving that makes the difference.
But when one team has diving and the other doesn't, it can make for quite the conundrum.
In their CBBN 4A-3A regular-season finale today, Hanford (7-0) and Richland (6-1) will head to Walla Walla (6-0), but diving will be crossed off the event lineup because Walla Walla's home pool at Whitman College lacks a board. As a result, the Blue Devils don't have any divers on their squad.

Omaha Creighton Prep, which won the meet in 2008, will be one of the more than 30 teams to compete today at the King County Aquatic Center.
"They've got pretty much the top seed in most of the events, but they wanted to come and swim in this pool," said Richland/Hanford coach Kathy Piper.

I'm compelled to respond to statements by Jim Deatherage published in the Herald (In Focus, Aug. 7).
First, I disagree with Deatherage's contention that the Richland School District's instruction materials committee didn't consider student input regarding The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. Student input was not "meaningless," as Deatherage stated.
Second, the motion to not add this book as core material was clearly stated in a public meeting and openly voted on by the Richland School Board. This certainly was not an "underhanded, manipulative motion."

The Mid-Columbia did not land any No. 1 seeds for the preliminaries of this year's boys state swimming and diving championships, but several competitors are in position to place well at the meet this upcoming weekend.
Richland senior Nick Connors is the No. 3 seed in the 4A 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 45.97 seconds. Prosser sophomore Will Burgett is seeded third in the 2A 100 breaststroke with his school-record time at districts (1:01.45).
Connors and Burgett are seeded in the top 10 in their other individual events. Connors has the No. 8 seed in the 500 free, while Burgett is 10th in the 50 free.

EAST WENATCHEE -- Hanford and Richland enjoyed a successful trip to East Wenatchee on Saturday, with both teams posting wins in their first swim meet since Dec. 10.
There were no state qualifying times for either team, but Richland or Hanford finished first in all but four events.
Will Wertz and Jake Douglas were a part of Hanford's winning 200-yard medley and 400 freestyle relays. Nick Connors took the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly for Richland.
