The king is dead. Long live the king.
It was a star-studded class of senior talent that graduated last spring, making way for the next crop of would-be standouts to write their chapter in the Mid-Columbia book of football.
The Tri-City Herald's first edition of preseason rankings proved a big hit. Of the 40 choices, 24 were first-team all-league, and four more second-team. There were three MVPs, an offensive lineman of the year, three offensive players of the year and two defensive POYs.

As the years pass, Connell High School will most certainly add more football championship banners to its gymnasium rafters. The tradition established there is bigger than any one player or one graduating class.
However, the Eagles can look long and hard, but they aren't likely to find another player like Matt Hadley, who hit the ground running as a freshman and didn't stop until he held two state records (and nearly a third).
The 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior running back racked up 124 career touchdowns and 746 career points -- both records for all classes -- and 6,881 rushing yards, second only to 7,755 by Timberline's Jonathan Stewart. He capped his career by rushing for 2,330 yards and 40 touchdowns, leading Connell to its second 1A state title in four seasons.

Chiawana's Downing, Zamora set to commit to EWU
PASCO -- Chiawana seniors Jordan Downing and Miquiyah Zamora, both named to the Washington 4A all-state football team in the fall, plan to remain teammates at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
The four-year starters went on a recruiting trip last weekend that all but finalized their decision. The next date for athletes to sign letters of intent is Feb. 1.
"It's not official, but it's really solid. It came down to Western Oregon and Eastern, but Eastern gave me a chance to play as a true freshman," said Zamora, a three-time all-CBBN defensive back who will play safety with the Eagles. "I'm just happy I get to prove myself to people that I belong at a Division I program."

Braves OL provides backbone for offense
The earth is round, the sky is blue and life is tough for offensive linemen.
They protect the quarterback for 4, 5, 6 seconds, and then "give up" a sack when he doesn't finally get rid of the ball.
They pull across the line and cave in an entire side of the defensive front, only to hear the "ooohs" and "aaahs" when a receiver peels back and earholes a corner on the sideline.
