RICHLAND -- The sport of running will never rival the likes of football for attention.
Tonight's football game between Kennewick and Kamiakin high schools figures to fill up the 6,800-seat Lampson Stadium.
The Richland Invite -- the area's biggest regular-season cross country meet -- likely will draw several hundred spectators, mostly family and friends. And even the all-classes state event at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco can't compete with a regular-season showdown between city rivals.

Just a couple of quick cross country notes.
First, I must have had a brain freeze when I was putting together a quick overview for the area cross country scene earlier this week. I forgot to include Southridge senior Rachel Dahl in a list of runners to keep an eye on.
Let's see ... All she did as a junior was place consistently in the top 10 throughout the season, then finish fifth at district, eighth at regional and 19th at the 3A state meet, easily the best finish for a Suns girl at state ever.

KENNEWICK It's Kamiakin's world; everyone else is just running in it.
In terms of the Mid-Columbia cross country scene, that's an apt description of this last fall season.
The Braves boys and girls not only dominated league meets -- at times placing their full squad of seven in the top 10 -- they performed well at the big races and brought home a bounty of state hardware.
Brackets set for Mat Classic XXIV
Brackets set for Mat Classic XXIV
Saturday's smiles can give way to Sunday frowns in a hurry as regional wrestling glory gives way to grim determination for what lies ahead at state.
The pairings for Mat Classic XXIV were released Sunday by the WIAA (go to wiaa.com for full brackets). The two-day mat-fest starts Friday at the Tacoma Dome. Some 1,200 wrestlers will descend on the dome in six separate tournaments.
One thing becomes clear when the brackets are released: Winning a regional championship means so much more than just that title. It means primo seeding.

1. The weights: The National Federation of State High School Associations gerrymandered the weights, levering one in up top by squeezing one out down low.
The lightest weight is 106 pounds, up from 103. The biggest weight remains 285. However, whereas the upper weights used to go up from 160 with increases of 11, 18, 26 and 70 pounds, it now jumps 10, 12, 13, 25 and 65 pounds.
However, that cost a weight below 145, and it might play to the detriment of some traditional powers that excel in the lower weights (Sunnyside and Hermiston come to mind).
