KENNEWICK -- Here is the runner-by-runner look at the Tri-City Herald's 2008 All-Area girls cross country squad:
Runner of the Year -- Nancy Cardenas, Sr., Umatilla: She won three invitationals and repeated as district champion, then won the Oregon 3A/2A/1A title by 20 seconds.
Cristal Delgado, Sr., Hermiston: She won the Hermiston Invite, took third at the Bob Firman Invite, sixth at Intermountain districts and placed seventh at Oregon 5A state.
Emily Hazen, Soph., Richland: She was one of the Bombers' most consistent runners all season; placed third at CBBN districts, 10th at regionals and 65th at 4A state.
Erin Hegarty, Soph., Hanford: She made the podium at 3A state for the second straight year, placing sixth; also won Capital Invite and district titles; seventh at regionals.
Maggie Jones, Soph., Richland: Followed up strong debut season in track last spring with five top-six finishes, including sixth at districts; 25th at regionals, 93rd at 4A state.
Haley Tank, Sr., Hanford: She had five top-10 finishes and was 13th at Sunfair; finished second at CBBN 3A districts, sixth at regionals and 37th at state.
Marisa Vander Malle, Jr., Pasco: She won the Connell and Bulldog invites, took second at Hermiston, fourth at CBBN districts, sixth at regionals and 52nd at 4A state.
Coach of the Year -- Lauri Sax, Richland: Bombers girls team won the CBBN dual-meet and district titles, placed second at regionals and went to state for the fourth straight year.

RICHLAND -- The sport of running will never rival the likes of football for attention.
Tonight's football game between Kennewick and Kamiakin high schools figures to fill up the 6,800-seat Lampson Stadium.
The Richland Invite -- the area's biggest regular-season cross country meet -- likely will draw several hundred spectators, mostly family and friends. And even the all-classes state event at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco can't compete with a regular-season showdown between city rivals.

In terms of the Mid-Columbia cross country scene, that's an apt description of this last fall season.
The Braves boys and girls not only dominated league meets -- at times placing their full squad of seven in the top 10 -- they performed well at the big races and brought home a bounty of state hardware.

PASCO -- Here is a race-by-race look at the 2011 Washington state cross country championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco:

Last year, the team title slipped from the grasp of Spokane schools for the first time in 23 years. On Saturday, the trophy went back to the west side of the Cascades for the first time since 1986 as Gig Harbor topped defending champ Eisenhower 55-78.

Just a couple of quick cross country notes.
First, I must have had a brain freeze when I was putting together a quick overview for the area cross country scene earlier this week. I forgot to include Southridge senior Rachel Dahl in a list of runners to keep an eye on.
Let's see ... All she did as a junior was place consistently in the top 10 throughout the season, then finish fifth at district, eighth at regional and 19th at the 3A state meet, easily the best finish for a Suns girl at state ever.
