YAKIMA -- Pat Richard ran for two scores and threw for another as No. 6 DeSales avenged a Week 1 loss to La Salle, defeating the top-ranked Lightning in a first-round 2B state playoff game at Marquette Stadium.
The defending champion Irish (8-3), who play Colfax (10-0) in the quarterfinals next week, took advantage of three turnovers and also stopped La Salle on downs inside the 20 in the fourth quarter.
Richard's second touchdown followed a La Salle score that pulled the Lightning (10-1) to within 14-10. The Irish went for it on fourth-and-1 from the La Salle 45, and Richard faked a dive play, then went around left end for the score.
"That was a really big play," said DeSales coach Mike Spiess. "I had a play called, but they called timeout and Pat came over to the sideline and said, 'Let's do this instead.' "
DeSales 7 7 6 7 -- 27
