2007 champions: Mead; Miles Unterreiner, Gig Harbor.

Team contenders: (state ranking in parentheses) Jackson (1); Tahoma (2); Ferris (3); Eisenhower (4); Mead (6).

Individuals to watch: Andrew Gonzales, sr., Southridge; Shane Moskowitz, jr., Central Kitsap; Julian-Blake Cowan, sr., Auburn Riverside; Conner Peloquin, jr., Gig Harbor; Kevin Rosaaen, sr., Wilson.

Local qualifiers: Anthony Armstrong, fr., Kamiakin; Evan Fiske, jr., Kamiakin; Andrew Gonzales, sr., Southridge.

Noteworthy: Gonzales ran away and hid from the field at the Eastern Regional, tying the course record at Carmichael Middle School in Richland in 14:57 and winning by 14 seconds. ... Gonzales (fourth) and Cowan (fifth) both made the podium at the 3A meet last year. ... Jackson is hoping to become the first westside school in two decades to win the team title. The Timberwolves finished second at the prestigious Stanford Invitational to vault to No. 1 in the coaches' poll and romped to the WesCo district title last week, led by individual champion Ben Lance. ... Ferris, which went 5-5 in Greater Spokane League duals this season and was runner-up to Mead at districts, upset the defending state champions and CBBN champion Eisenhower to win the Eastern Regional title for the first time since 1995 and ending Mead's three-year title run. ... Moskowitz blew away the field at the West Central District meet, winning by 19 seconds over Cowan in 15:14.

Class 3A

Time: 2 p.m.

2007 champions: North Central; Ryan Prentice, Mount Rainier.

Individuals to watch: Andrew Kimpel, sr., North Central; Michael Miller, sr., Mount Rainier; Trevor Thompson, jr., Lindbergh; Allan Schroeder, jr., Mount Spokane; Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald, jr., Seattle Prep.

Noteworthy: North Central is the top-ranked team in the nation, according to dyestat.com, and the two-time defending state champion. The Indians breezed to the Eastern Region title, placing all seven of their runners in the top 10. ... Glacier Peak, a Snohomish school in its first year of existence, won the Northwest District title led by race winner Jeff Bastian, a sophomore. ... All in the family: Seattle Prep's Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald won both the Metro League and Sea-King District titles. The junior is the younger brother of 2006 state champion Max O'Donoghue-McDonald. ... Miller, a two-time state champion in Alaska, moved to Mount Rainier last spring to face tougher competition and gain exposure as a runner. He was fourth at the 3A state track meet in the 800 last May.

Class 2A

Time: 1:30 p.m.

2007 champions: Burlington-Edison; Justin Rose, Colville.

Noteworthy: Aubol romped to the CWAC district title, winning by 22 seconds and leading Ellensburg to a 47-49 victory over Selah for the team title. ... B-E edged Sehome on a sixth-place tiebreaker for the title last year, but Sehome appears to have the clear edge this year. It won the Northwest District title by 23 points over B-E last weekend. ... Kingston finished third at the West Central District meet to qualify for state for the first time.

Class 1A

Time: Noon.

2007 champions: Royal; Humberto Jimenez, Royal.
