Pendleton man arrested in alleged robbery attempt

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

A 31-year-old Pendleton man wanted in connection with an attempted robbery and assault of an Oregon medical marijuana provider was arrested in Walla Walla, police said Monday.

A tip led police to a private home in Walla Walla where Bobby Lee Ruston was found with a gunshot wound to his right hand, Oregon State Police said.

Ruston, who was considered armed and dangerous, ran from police during a traffic stop after the Friday night robbery attempt in Long Creek.

Ruston's accomplice, Lance Sanchez, 28, of Milton-Freewater, was caught while trying to run away, officials said.

The men are suspected of going to the Long Creek residence of David Verstoppen, 53, a medical marijuana provider, to steal marijuana Friday night.

Verstoppen saw the two masked men and initially thought they were pulling a Halloween prank, until one suspect displayed a gun and said he was willing to use it, police said.

A shot was fired from the gun during a scuffle, which might have caused Ruston's wound, but Verstoppen was not hit by the bullet, OSP said. Verstoppen was repeatedly hit by the second suspect before the two men ran off.

Verstoppen was treated and later released from Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day.

The OSP, Grant County sheriff's deputies and John Day police responded.

Sanchez was booked into the Umatilla County jail on suspicion of assault, robbery, burglary and menacing.

Ruston, who had outstanding warrants for his arrest, is being held in the Walla Walla County jail.
