5 battle for 4 seats up for election

By Franny White, Herald staff writer

HERMISTON -- Four incumbents and one newcomer are vying for four at-large positions on the Hermiston City Council.

The incumbents say they want to continue working on projects the council already has started, such as upgrading the city's wastewater treatment plant to meet more stringent Department of Environmental Quality discharge standards.

The four -- Rod Hardin, Brian Misner, Joe Harn and Michael Calame -- say the current council is meeting the city's goals.

"The current council is a very strong team," Misner said. "Not that we're all 'yes' people, but I think we work well together."

The fifth man, Bill Myers, is the sole challenger.

He did not return calls seeking comment for this story, but said during an unsuccessful May campaign to unseat incumbent Mayor Bob Severson that he wanted to encourage local business growth and bring an independent and reasonable voice to city hall. He's reportedly also working on a taxpayer's bill of rights.

w Candidate: Michael Calame (incumbent)

w Age: 47

w Occupation: Owner, M2MachMedia wireless Internet company

Calame is finishing his fourth year on the city council and was on the city planning commission for about a year before that.

He wants to see Hermiston have more entertainment and shopping options without hurting local businesses and upgrade the city's wastewater treatment plant.

w Candidate: Rod Hardin (incumbent)

w Age: 62

w Occupation: Principal, Hermiston Christian School

Hardin is finishing his 17th year on the city council and also served on the city's citizen budget committee for two years.

He wants Hermiston residents to have a high quality of life with good parks, public safety and an enhanced municipal wastewater treatment plant.

w Candidate: Brian Misner (incumbent)

w Age: 58

w Occupation: Food service coordinator, Two Rivers Correctional Institution

Misner was appointed to the city council in May after Manuel Gutierrez resigned for personal reasons. He also served on the city planning commission from 2004 to 2008.

He wants to bring the proposed Eastern Oregon Higher Education Center to Hermiston, continue addressing gang issues and draw new industries to the area.

w Candidate: Joe Harn (incumbent)

w Age: 58

w Occupation: Computer technician, Good Shepherd Medical Center

Harn is finishing his fourth year on the council.

He wants to upgrade the city's wastewater treatment plant, keep crime in check and help Hermiston grow slowly.

w Candidate: Bill Myers

w Age: Late 20s.

w Occupation: Vice president, Epha, his family's plastic manufacturing business

Myers unsuccessfully ran for mayor in May and city council in 2006. He could not be reached for this story, but said in May that he wanted to encourage local business growth and bring an independent, reasonable voice to Hermiston government.
