Cross roundup: Southridge's Gonzales wins 4A regional in record time

By Kevin Anthony, Herald staff writer

No one can accuse the members of the North Central cross country team of being socialists, because they do not like to spread the wealth.

In an Eastern Washington regional meet filled with outstanding performances -- Southridge's Andrew Gonzales matching the course record of 14 minutes, 57 seconds in the 4A race among the best -- nothing stood out more than the Indians' utter domination of the 3A boys race Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Middle School in Richland.

Ranked No. 1 in the nation and the two-time defending state champs, North Central placed the first three runners, led by Andrew Kimpel, and filled up seven of the 10 individual spots that move on to state.

"That was our main goal," said NC's Leon Dean, who finished second. "We kind of set our goals to have as many guys get in front of the other team's first guy."

The Indians are heavy favorites to win a third consecutive state title next weekend at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

The top 10 individuals and two teams advanced from the 3A, while the top 15 and three teams moved on from the 4A races.

While the Greater Spokane League took all of the 3A boys berths, Gonzales led a trio of Mid-Columbia boys to advance to the 4A state meet. He'll be joined by Kamiakin's Evan Fiske (eighth) and Anthony Armstrong (14th). The Suns just missed a team berth, 12 points behind Mead for third place.

No one challenged Gonzales, who ran alone the entire second half of the race to claim his first regional title.

"I'm looking forward to winning (state) -- that's my goal," Gonzales said. "I've already ran against the best guys in the state, and I'm confident I can get it."

The Tri-Cities qualified a pair of girls teams, both from Richland.

Hanford, hoping to repeat as regional champions, finished second in the 3A race by six points to Mount Spokane, with Haley Tank and Erin Hegarty finishing sixth and seventh respectively to lead all five scoring Falcons in the top 16.

Sunnyside's Jocelyn Yanez finished fifth in a race that was never in doubt, with Shadle Park's Andrea Nelson, last year's 4A state champion, winning in 18:05, 47 seconds ahead of second place.

Richland finished 11 points behind Central Valley in the 4A team race, with Davis grabbing the third spot to state.

Davis' Sandra Martinez edged Mead's Baylee Mires for the title, pulling away when Mires stumbled near the finish. Martinez's winning time of 17:41 was four seconds off the course record Nelson posted in 2007.

Caitlin Parker (eighth) and Emily Hazen (10th) led Richland, which placed all seven runners in the top 33 and had a 34-second split among its scoring five.

"Our team strategy is to start farther back and work more toward the middle of the race," Parker said of the Bombers' strong finish and second straight second-place regional showing.

Pasco's Marisa Vander Malle finished sixth and will be joined at state by teammate Janette Rodriguez (11th) for a second straight year. Last year, Vander Malle ran with pain throughout the season. This year, Rodriguez has been battling injuries, though she looked strong in qualifying for state.

"Having her run with me this race was really good," Vander Malle said.
