Watching the Tampa Bay Rays make it to the World Series made me realize something: Another team makes it to the Fall Classic before our Seattle Mariners.
That means the number of teams who have never been to the World Series is down to three -- the Texas Rangers, the Washington Nationals and the Mariners.
And while I feel for Rangers fans (no Series since the teams inception in 1961 as the second Washington Senators) and Nationals fans (started as the Montreal Expos in 1969), Mariners fans also have had very few seasons to celebrate since the team began play in 1977.
One of them, of course, was the 2001 season in which the team won 116 games but couldnt get past the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Two other times the team has been to the ALCS only to fall short.
The Ms, of course, are a ways away from the playoffs as the new general manager may have to implode the team and start over.
Oh well. We can do what we always do, and follow former Mariners who seem to find success after Seattle management discards them.
If youre like me, I used to be able to recite an all-star team, position by position, of former Mariners.
During the Series, we can follow what starter Jamie Moyer and infielder Greg Dobbs will do. Thats the closest thing Mariners fans can experience to the World Series.
