Cross country roundup: Richland girls run to title

By the Herald staff

WENATCHEE -- The Richland girls ran away with their third straight district title Thursday, finishing with less than half of second-place Davis' point total in the CBBN 4A race at Walla Walla Point Park.

Davis' Sandra Martinez and Shawna Schooley finished 1-2, but Emily Hazen (third), Katie Mahoney (fifth), Maggie Jones (sixth) and Caitlin Parker (eighth) came in almost on top of each other.

The top six teams and top 20 individuals not on the qualifying teams advance to next weekend's regional meet with the Greater Spokane League at Richland's Carmichael Middle School.

There was little surprise on the boys side, with Southridge's Andrew Gonzales winning his third straight district title. Likewise for Eisenhower with its third straight team title. The Cadets did not have a runner in the top five, but had four of the next five finishers.

CBBN 3A Districts

It was a big day for Hanford at the CBBN 3A district meet, though the results make no difference on next weekend’s regional at Carmichael Middle School.

The Falcons swept the boys and girls team titles and invidividual championships on the 5-kilometer course at Leslie Groves Park.

Erin Hegarty led the Hanford girls with a winning time of 19 minutes, 21.2 seconds, finishing nine seconds ahead of second-place teammate Haley Tank as the Falcons placed five of the top seven runners.

On the boys side, Albert Rodriguez topped Hanford’s crew at 16:43.3, with teammate Zach Martin six seconds back in second place.
