In a case of the rich getting richer, the Prosser Mustangs have found another threat in recent weeks to complement the ridiculous numbers their passing game piles up.
After sitting out the first two weeks of the season with an ankle injury, running back Dylan Bolt has torched defenses with 382 yards and six TDs in the last three weeks, averaging nearly a first down every time he touches the ball.
Despite missing 40 percent of the season, Bolt is fifth in the Central Washington Athletic Conference in rushing.
Coach Tom Moore had high expectations for the 150-pound junior coming into the season.
"He was a real good player last year," Moore said. "He's real fast, hits the hole real hard. He's a real good running back."
Of course, it helps when defenses have to plan on stopping QB Jordan Durbin (1,330 yards, 26 TDs) and WR Kirby Moore (35-583, 13 TDs). Prosser has put up such big numbers and set so many records in recent years that it was hardly news when Moore topped former Mustang Cody Bruns' team and state record of 72 career TDs last week against Toppenish and now has 74 with half the regular season to go.
Moore is also tied for second all-time in the nation in career TD receptions, nine behind Abram Booty's 83 from 1993-96 for Evangel Christian in Shreveport, La.
Prosser (5-0) travels to Ellensburg (4-1) tonight for a matchup of two of the CWAC's three teams with 4-0 league records.
The Bulldogs have a prodigious talent of their own in QB Ethan Sterkel, who is seventh in the league in rushing (355 yards, 6 TDs) and second in passing yards (892, 13 TDs). Kramer Ferrell is second in receiving (26-506, 6 TDs).
Selah, the CWAC's other unbeaten team, plays at Toppenish. Meanwhile, Othello (4-1, 3-1) plays at East Valley (2-3, 2-2) and Grandview (1-4, 0-4) plays host to Ephrata (1-4, 1-3).
In the SCAC East, Columbia-Burbank (2-3, 2-1) plays at Connell (2-3, 2-0).
Eagles senior Carlis Bailon-Schubert leads the league in rushing (94-549, 5 TDs), while the Coyotes' Seth Shelton is third (77-459, 6 TDs). However, Burbank may have trouble overcoming Connell's advantage in the air -- Eagles QB Nathan Martinez has 785 yards compared to Neal Schuck's 428.
In the East's other games, Royal (5-0, 2-0) plays at Kiona-Benton (0-5, 0-3) and Wahluke (4-1, 2-1) is at River View (3-2, 1-1).
The Knights lost leading rusher Omar Avelar late last week when he quit the team, but they used a host of backs to amass 237 rushing yards in a 61-0 win over Warden.
