Fill your calendar with classes, tasting events

Whether you want to learn how to turn summer's bounty of fresh produce into zesty salsas, sample artisan cheese or cook Italian, there's a class for that in the coming weeks.

You can even do your part to help support the vineyard and winery technology program at Yakima Valley Community College in Grandview by drinking wine and dancing.

Salsa cooking class

PROSSER -- Join Executive Chef Eric Cardenas in the kitchen of Desert Wind Winery in Prosser for a salsa making party from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10.

Class is limited to 30. Cost is $40 per person and includes the cooking class, food and wine. Call 509-786-7277, ext. 104 to reserve your seat.

Wine, fundraising gala

GRANDVIEW -- Yakima Valley Community College will raise scholarship money for its Vineyard and Winery Technology students and the Grandview campus library at a September gala.

The Grape to Glass Gala is scheduled for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the college's teaching winery, 114 Grandridge Road in Grandview. The gala will include tasting of student-created wines, appetizers, live music and auctions.

Tickets cost $30 per person and can be purchased by calling 509-574-4753 or e-mailing wine@yvcc.edu.

Cooking in Lincoln City

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. -- On Oct. 4 Ken Henson of the Pelican Pub and Brewery will teach Italian cooking at the Pacific Coast Center for Culinary Arts in Lincoln City. The class will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $90 and includes a meal.

Seattle cheese tasting

SEATTLE -- On Oct. 21 Beecher's Handmade Cheese, located in Pike Place Market in Seattle, will hold "Cheese 101: Introduction to Artisan Cheese," an interactive cheese and wine pairing session.

In 2 1/2 hours you'll learn to recognize different types of cheese, learn the history of artisan cheese and the cheese making process and taste a wide array of American cheeses in many different styles, made with different milks.
