'Lady MacDonald' ousted from fair

By the Herald staff

The Kennewick woman who for years has brought baby chicks to the Old MacDonald Farm Barn at the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo has been banned from the fairgrounds.

Raymona Balko was told to pack up her chicks and get out Thursday afternoon by one of the directors of the fair association, she told the Herald.

Director George Clary and Balko disagreed earlier this week about his order to no longer allow children to touch newly hatched chicks because of the health risk involving salmonella.

Balko said she has volunteered at the barn, which is a farm animal petting zoo, for at least 30 years, and always allowed children to touch and hold baby chicks.

Thursday's eviction came after Balko lifted the screen lid on the chick enclosure to separate chicks from the hen so children could get a better view, Balko said. She said no child was exposed to or touched a baby chick while she was at the chicken enclosure.

Clary said the eviction came after he and Balko met at the barn and couldn't agree on her abiding by his order.

Balko, who likes to think of herself as "Lady MacDonald," said Clary asked two security officers to escort her and her chickens off the fairgrounds, and she complied.
