Benton County is expected to release updated primary election figures this afternoon, which could help clear up which Republican will advance to the general election with Democrat Carol Moser in a race for an open House seat in the 8th Legislative District.
Moser was getting 40 percent of the vote last night. Brad Klippert was getting 3,301 votes, or 18.6 percent, while Skip Novakovich was getting 3,022 votes, or 17 percent, and two other Republicans Rick Jansons and Steve Simmons were farther back.
But todays numbers will only include votes from ballots received by the county auditors office through Monday. That means ballots mailed Monday and Tuesday will still be left uncounted.
Quite a few, Auditor Bobbie Gagner said.
Novakovich said this morning he was a bit surprised it was Klippert who is slipping through the crowded Republican field and that its Simmons who is lagging behind. He said hes observed Simmons campaigning hard.
As for Klippert, who hasnt reported raising or spending any money for his campaign, I dont know what he really did, Novakovich said.
Ill update this post when new numbers come in.
UPDATE: The new numbers are in and Klippert has widened his lead from 279 votes to 345, picking up one-tenth of 1 percentage point in the process. He now has 3,722 votes, or 18.6 percent, to Novakovichs 3,377 votes, or 16.9 percent.
"I'm proceeding with caution," said Klippert, a Benton County sheriff's deputy.
A new tally will be released tomorrow.

WALLA WALLA — Port of Walla Walla Commissioner Mike Fredrickson held his lead over challenger Barlow Corkrum today in a surprising new ballot update that resulted in no change whatsoever in the distance between the two candidates.
An automatic recount appears nearly certain. State law calls for such a recount if the margin between the candidates is less than 0.5 percent of the total votes cast.
In this election, 15,960 votes have been counted, according to the county Elections Office website. County Auditor Karen Martin said today more than 100 votes remain to be counted, which would peg the cutoff number at 80 or 81.

Democrat Jay Clough of West Richland announced Thursday that he will cease his campaign to unseat 4th District U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings and instead will enter the 8th District legislative race against state Rep. Brad Klippert.
Clough told the Herald he is entering the state race because it will allow him to engage in public service while also spending time with his family.
But he also criticized Klippert, a Kennewick Republican, as ineffective in the Legislature since being elected in 2008. Klippert was re-elected in 2010 with 62 percent of the vote.

A 30-year-old financial adviser who believes his job will help prepare him well for budget discussions was in the lead Tuesday night to become Pasco's newest school board member.
Ryan Brault had 3,685 votes, or 64 percent, for Position 2 of the Pasco School District board, according to preliminary election results. His opponent, Patrick McBurney Sr., had 2,101 votes, or 36 percent.
McBurney, 66, is a retired engineer. He previously ran for the board in 2007.
