MILL CREEK -- Alex Mroz of Woodinville is leading the pack of 137 players after an impressive opening round of 5-under-par 67 at the 54th PNGA Junior Boys' Amateur Championship being held at Mill Creek Country Club.
Mroz's opening round included seven birdies and only two bogeys. Hank Frame of Spokane, Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham and recent U.S. Amateur qualifier Ricky McDonald of Shoreline are two shots back after all carding 3-under 69s.
Other players who shot under par in the opening round of the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying include Reid Martin of Mukilteo and Bradley Harrelson of Snoqualmie with 2-under 70s, and Jack Pennington of Eugene, Jack Kelly of Seattle and William Holdridge of Bellingham at 1-under 71.
The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play to determine flights for the match play portion of the championship.
The lowest 32 scorers from the qualifying rounds will advance to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants.
Walla Walla's Drew Reinland fired a 76, while Richland's Josh Harvey and Scott Kim each had 77s.

Williams would also win a pair of major amateur championships with back to back victories at the 18th Sahalee Players Championship and the 45th Pacific Coast Amateur in July. He would shoot a 16-under par, 268 to earn medalist honors at the 109th Western Amateur, where he would end up finishing as a quarterfinalist. At Saturday's Eastern Washington Jamboree in Prosser, Hailey Rankin of the host Mustangs swam the 100-yard butterfly in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 2.32 seconds.
That night, more state qualifiers rolled in at the Richland Twilight Jamboree. Hanford senior Melissa Merrill qualified on her own in the 50 freestyle, then helped the Falcons achieve state-qualifying times in the 400 free and 200 medley relays.
