50-word statement:
The people of Benton County deserve open-minded and aggressive leadership that truly reflects their values and needs. I am the man who can bring real forward thinking progress to our communities. For the past ten years, the people of Benton County have had to deal with an unresponsive county commission. My campaign is based on my sincere desire to make our county government meet the peoples' needs in changing times. My life experiences, combined with my years on the West Richland City Council, my employment by the county for over a decade, and my leadership experience on the board of various charities, make me the best candidate to fairly and openly represent the people of Benton County as Commissioner, Position One.
Three priorities:
I want first to work to control county spending, which has skyrocketed 62% in the past four years. Then, I want the commission to focus on the needs of those who pay taxes and let them decide where their priorities truly lie, especially with regard to the county seat. The $55 million our current commission has spent on the Kennewick county facilities in the previous four years has been without voter approval and contrary to state law. I further want to expand on the working relationship between the county, the municipalities, and the ports to lower costs and increase efficiency. I wholeheartedly want to work toward making our county justice system more pro-active than reactive, and to change the justice system's focus to prevention over intervention, especially with regard to juveniles. I plan to make use of my 30 years of agricultural experience to build alliances between ag and business, balancing my high regard of natural resources with my desire to make Benton County a prosperous one for all income levels. Finally, I find the county commission's lack of accessibility to the common man to be a reflection of their general disregard for the voting public. I have spent my life as that common man, a soldier, a farmer, a father and husband; I believe this, in addition to my background in politics and leadership, makes me uniquely qualified to be your representative and responsive Benton County Commissioner.

PROSSER -- Voters in Prosser have an abundance of late-filer candidates seeking to fill city council positions in Tuesday's election.
Prosser's Position 7 seat was open during the Aug. 16 primary when incumbent Terry G. Chambers chose not to seek re-election. That prompted five candidates to enter the race.
They are Debbie Breitenfeldt, Larry Walter, Jim Macica, Tammy McKiernan and Scott Hamilton.

Port of Walla Walla: Fredrickson
This letter is to urge Burbank residents to support Michael Fredrickson for the Port of Walla Walla Board of Commissioners. I served with Mike on the county planning commission and feel qualified to assure you that Mike has plenty of ability to continue to steer our port district with enthusiasm and excellence.
Our years on the planning commission together showed me that Mike's natural leadership ability easily earns the respect of all who work with him and that Mike has an impressive awareness of the county's characteristics and needs for the future. Please join me in re-electing Michael Fredrickson.
Benton Fire District 3: Sherman
Benton Fire District 3: Sherman
As a fire commissioner serving on the Benton County Fire District 3 board, I know we need a person with board experience to be an active participant on the board. We need someone with no agenda or motives other than to serve and make the county safer and our fire department the best it can be. I feel that Gerry Sherman is the best candidate for this position.
Gerry has been attending yearly Washington State Fire Commissioner Association, Washington State Fire Chief's Association and Washington Finance Officers Association conferences to keep up to date on ever-changing board and fire department issues. Gerry's previous board member experience and 12 years as district secretary for Benton Co. District 6 make him, in my opinion, the best candidate for fire commissioner.
Recently, the Benton County commissioners were asked to choose a person to fill a vacant commissioner position on Benton County Fire District 3 Board. Three applicants interviewed and Gerry Sherman was appointed to fill the position by the

Next year's travel money for Benton commissioners almost gone
Benton County's lobbying activity on state and federal issues will be curtailed sharply next year because the travel money almost is gone.
Just $5,000 is left for commissioner travel costs for the rest of this year and all of next year.
And the commissioners have decided to divide the remaining money three ways, which virtually eliminates opportunities to travel to Washington, D.C., or to spend much time in Olympia lobbying for legislation.
Franklin County unsure about Voluntary Stewardship Program
Franklin County unsure about Voluntary Stewardship Program
Franklin County commissioners aren't sure if an alternative approach to managing agricultural lands would be better for county farmers.
Commissioners discussed Wednesday whether to opt-in to the state's new Voluntary Stewardship Program. About 25 people attended.
Counties have until Jan. 22 to decide whether to join the recently created state program, which would be an alternative to the critical area development regulations mandated by the state Growth Management Act for protecting areas used for agriculture.
