FLAGS:Gov. Gregoire directs flags lowered to honor soldier
Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency buildings be lowered to half-staff today, in memory of U.S. Army Sergeant Alexander J. Bennett of Tacoma. Bennett died Aug. 6th in Afghanistan when the helicopter he was in crashed.
Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Tuesday, or first thing Wednesday morning, Aug. 17th.
Congress amended the U.S. Flag Code to give governors the authority to lower flags when a state resident in the military is killed in the line of duty. Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join in this recognition.

Fast focus: Consider the average
Be careful what you accept as truth regarding state salaries. While an "average" state salary may look high, consider the fact that the state doesn't hire many minimum-wage burger flippers. Many state jobs require college or advanced degrees. Medical doctors employed at University Hospital at the University of Washington are some of the best in the nation; their salaries will be high because they are worth it. Most state jobs require supervisory level expertise or better and appropriate pay. Be careful of the athletic coaches' pay as well. Frequently, they are paid in part from outside funds-alumni supporter organizations, for example.
If you argue that state workers should not be paid more than the governor, would you agree to pay the governor more?

State has enough money
State has enough money
I am surprised by the Herald's lack of forthrightness when running budget crisis articles dealing with Washington state's spending problems. Normally, a newspaper delves into a story to report all the facts.
Our current proposed state budget in total dollars is more than the last budget. And it is only $1.5 billion less than the 2007-2009 budget.
The $10.5 billion budget cuts since 2008, bantered about by the governor, consists of items that the state wanted to fund but was unable to. In simple terms, if the governor had the ability to collect more money, the state would have spent $10.5 billion more than it spent in 2008.
