David Bryant and the U-10 Miss Ahern Rentals took immediate control of Columbia Cup heat 3B, then used a penalty imposed upon Jeff Bernard to earn another heat victory and a spot in the final heat.
Bryant was leading the field out of the first turn from lane three when Bernard in the U-5 FormulaBoats.com hooked out slightly, cutting across the path of Steve David, who was in between the two in the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto.
The slip-up earned Bernard a one-lap penalty and sent David to a brief stop in the infield.
David recovered but was a half-lap down. He was able to finish third by picking off Kip Brown in the U-17 Our Gang Racing.
Jimmy King placed second in the piston-powered U-3 Hoss Mortgage Investors II, followed by David and Brown.
Bernard finished fifth overall as a result of the penalty.
