State Supreme Court: Debra Stephens

Debra Stephens

Party: non-partisan

Candidate for: State Supreme Court Justice position 7

Incumbent? Yes

Age: 43

Hometown: Spokane

Occupation: State Supreme Court Justice

50-word statement: The first woman from Eastern Washington to serve on the State Supreme Court, I bring unique experience as an attorney, constitutional law scholar, and Appeals Court judge to the bench. Rated "Exceptionally Well Qualified" by five Bar Associations, I am committed to protecting the rights and liberties of all Washingtonians.

Three priorities: The goals I set when I was appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor Gregoire remain my top priorities. First, I recognize that I bring a collegial spirit to the court, and I will strive to find common ground in the resolution of cases, whenever possible. Second, I hope to promote stability and finality in the law through opinions that reflect judicial restraint and are as brief and clear as possible. Third, I recognize that judges play a role as ambassadors of the justice system, and I am committed to remaining active in community efforts to achieve equal justice and respect for the law.
