50-word statement: Our rights to life, liberty and property are the gift of God, not a dispensation from civil government. Public policy must be strictly constrained by both our state and federal Constitutions and adhere to the Biblically prescribed moral values designed to protect the fabric of our civil society.
Three priorities: Stand against federal encroachment upon states rights and the rights of our citizens.
Drastically reduce the tax burden - eliminate the state portion of the property tax.
Protection of God given rights.

I believe that it is not only the state's responsibility, but the responsibility of parents, too. I'm still shaking my head on this question. Don't I pay for the governor, state representative, senators, etc., etc. to get to work? I pay heavily in my property taxes for school and state, they should pay too. Our governor should look in the mirror first when making cuts rather than at our school budget. Gov. Gregoire, are you serious?

EAST SAND ISLAND -- It's been a dozen years since the federal government moved thousands of black-capped squawking seabirds here to reduce their diet of endangered fish.
Things haven't gone as planned.
The hope in relocating the world's largest colony of Caspian terns to this sandy mound near the river's mouth was that they would eat more sardines and herring -- and fewer young salmon and steelhead. And they have.

Regarding recent letters and articles about urban chickens: To our way of thinking, there are no such thing as urban chickens. We prefer to think of our small flock as backyard pets, each with its own name, distinct personality and established position in the pecking order.
From personal experience, hens are the ultimate recyclers. They eat leftovers, weeds, lawn clippings, slugs and snails, turning them into beautiful fresh eggs. Not only are chickens useful as a source for eggs, but to those familiar with them, charming and fascinating pets.
Maintaining a small flock of chickens can help teach a child responsibility. Interacting with their flock will give them joy, relaxation and reward them with a sense of daily accomplishment.
