SEATTLE -- Dan Wampfler, winemaker for Dunham Cellars in Walla Walla, will join the Washington State Wine Commission this month as a new board member to help with marketing.
Wampfler has been head winemaker at Dunham since 2008 and holds a master's degree in enology from Michigan State University. He began working in Washington in 2003 as a research enologist for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and worked in various positions at Chateau Ste. Michelle and Columbia Crest until he accepted the position at Dunham.
"I feel that becoming an active member of the Washington State Wine Commission will be a great opportunity to assist with industry challenges," Wampfler said in a news release, adding "education, as well as promotion, is very important to the Washington wine industry."

QUINCY There will be a change at Cave B Estate Winery as its owners have scheduled an auction for their historic winery, vineyards, resort, restaurant and adjacent property near George.
The auction is scheduled for March 15 in Seattle with a suggested opening bid of $3.5 million for Cave B Inn & Spa. Options offered by owners Vince and Carol Bryan include the winery, vineyards, orchards and opportunities for a golf course, additional hospitality, residential and fractional home sites.
Despite what all is auctioned off next month, Cave B winemaker Freddy Arredondo said Sunday the brand that he's been in charge of since 2007 would continue.

Barnard Griffin started off 2012 right with an unprecedented award for its Rosé of Sangiovese. The wine from the 2011 vintage won a gold medal and the sweepstakes for top pink wine of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
This is the seventh consecutive year the Richland winery has won gold or better for its Rosé of Sangiovese.
Owner/winemaker Rob Griffin expressed surprise at the award because winter damage forced him to change vineyard sources last year.

If the Washington and Oregon wine industries were a political movement, they might be known as Occupy Wine Spectator.
On the annual list of the top wines from the world's largest wine periodical, Washington and Oregon are the 11 percent.
The list, which came out Monday, includes 11 wines from the Northwest. As a region, Washington and Oregon make about 5 percent of U.S. wine, and the United States produces about 7 percent of the wine in the world.

1. Washington voters pass Initiative 1183. In November, voters did away with Washington's state liquor stores by passing the Costco-backed Initiative 1183. Many wineries, wine shops and groceries are still trying to sort out the full effect of the new law, but the bottom line is that Washington's largest wine retailer -- liquor stores -- are going away.
