50-word statement: I have been teaching in public schools of Washington every year since 1957. I have worked with students of all levels, from kindergarten to college graduate level. I currently teach 16 classes each week on a volunteer basis in 7 different schools.
Three priorities: 1. Full and equal state funding of K-12 education, accompanied by a ban on special levies for operations.

Impressed by prison
Impressed by prison
On Aug. 17, relatives and friends of staff had the opportunity to attend the celebration marking the 125th anniversary at the Washington State Penitentiary at Walla Walla. Excellent speeches shared the history of the prison, including the dark years of the 1970s, and progress made over the years. Statistics were shared that were eye-opening, as they contradict much of what is assumed by the public when we don't take time to obtain the facts.
We were extremely impressed with the level of professionalism of all the staff we met during our small-group guided tours of various departments, ranging from the intensive management unit to laundry and kitchen to industries and education to hospital.
The strict procedures that are in place to protect staff, visitors and offenders are remarkable.
Uncivil discourse
Uncivil discourse
I don't watch NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon , however, I do read the news. I was very offended when I read that the band on Fallon's show played the 1985 Fishbone song, Lyin' A__B____ as an introduction to his guest Michele Bachman. Whether or not you agree with Michele Bachman is not the issue. She is a presidential candidate who was invited on a talk show to discuss her views.
I can relate to this situation on many different levels; I am female, I co-host a monthly talk radio show and I am an elected leader. When I invite a guest on my show or a constituent contacts me, I treat them with professional courtesy, irrespective of whether or not I agree with their position.
To insult someone is not the way to invite productive dialogue. It's no wonder that public discourse is so strained when it is accompanied by veiled insults and provocative comments. Issues cannot be resolved without meaningful discussion; there is no meaningful discussion without civility.

Public education is everything. Children are powerless to say "don't cut my programs" or "don't reduce my opportunities." Only you have the power to ensure that schools can continue to support the future of our community.
Be a voice for the voiceless. Vote YES for Pasco Schools.

Franklin County officials want to add to staff
A full-time Superior Court commissioner, two clerks and four correction officers are among the wish list additions Franklin County elected officials and department heads will present to commissioners this week.
But whether those requests become a reality will depend on how Franklin County wrestles with its preliminary 2012 budget that has a deficit of about $1.8 million.
The county's draft 2012 operating budget is estimated to have about $24.3 million in expenses but $22.5 million in revenues, according to county documents.
