Golf roundup: 3 Hanford boys make cut at state

By Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editor

Rain proved to be the undoing of many Mid-Columbia high school golfers Tuesday at the Washington state championships in the Bellingham area.

"It got really sloppy out there," said Walla Walla boys coach Jim Smith. "We've played in some wet conditions this year. But we don't play with the way the turf was here. Unless you pick it absolutely perfect with your irons, the ball is not going anywhere."

Pasco girls coach Jim Steach agreed.

"There was standing water everywhere," Steach said. "Conditions were tough."

Some players were able to make it through the cut -- including Hanford boys Josh Harvey, Scott Kim and Alex Cantu in the 3A tournament at Bellingham Country Club.

Harvey and Kim each had 75s, and Cantu had a 78.

But none of them were ecstatic.

"I didn't play well, but it's a good number, I guess," said Harvey.

Here's a look at each state tournament:

4A boys

Walla Walla's Drew Reinland was the only CBL golfer to make the cut with a 5-over 77.

Reinland is 23rd, and he rallied after a slow start.

"At one time on the back side he was 2-over," said Smith. "Then he took a double and a bogey on the last two par-5s coming in."

Smith said the kids with later tee times had better conditions than the early starters.

"It rained when we got there, then it poured and it finally let up at noon," Smith said. "There was about 35 kids who didn't play with any rain."

Kamiak's Redi Martin leads after the first round with a 70.

The stunner here was that Pasco senior Neddy Martinez, an Eastern Washington signee, missed the cut with a 94.

Steach said Martinez had a 52 on the front nine at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club.

"She just had two bad holes," he said. "She hit a couple of balls in the water and another out of bounds."

While Martinez rallied with a 42 on the back nine, it wasn't enough to get her into today's final round.

Teammate Kelsey Johnson did make the cut with an 87, sitting in 17th and 17 strokes behind leader Rui Li of Kentwood

"Kelsey ran into some putting problems, but she got a birdie on 16 and birdie on 17 to right the ship," Steach said. "She'll see what she can do tomorrow."

Richland's Mary McDonald also made the cut with an 89 and is in 24th place.

"That was a good score for the conditions," said Richland girls coach Janet Schuster. "There were some holes she could have played better. She was nervous. She was a freshman playing with two seniors. My main goal for her was to make the cut and she did it."

Harvey was frustrated with his round.

"The way I hit it off the tee, I could have been leading," he said. "I didn't hit any bad spots. But I was scrambling to make par."

He and Kim both trail tournament leaders Matt Rawitzer of Squalicum and Daniel Snoey of Camas by six strokes.

"I birdied the first hole, but couldn't get anything going," said Kim. "I played well on the back nine. But I made too many mistakes."

Cantu had to dig himself out of a hole.

"I'm disappointed," he said. "I started the first five holes at 5-over with a double. Then I turned it around with a 1-over on the next 13 holes. I figured before the round I need to shoot under 78 to make the cut, and I was right on it."

3A girls

Issaquah's Brittany Tallman and Kristin Tan of Holy Names are tied for the lead at 74 at Shuksan Golf Club in Bellingham.

West Valley's Jenna Boyle is 14th with an 87, but no other CBL golfers made the cut.

2A boys

Hockinson dominated the first round at Loomis Trail Golf & Country Club in Blaine, as the first four individuals on the leaderboard play for the school.

No Mid-Columbian golfers survived the cut. The top local scores were 85s by Prosser teammates Tommy Contreras and Chad Hadcock.

2A girls

Othello's Ashley Amoruso (95) and Katie Gardner (102) each made the cut after the first round at Homestead Golf Course in Lynden. Bellingham's Claire Rachor leads the field with a 77.

1A boys

Royal's DJ Solis is 13th after the first round at the North Bellingham Golf Course with a 79. He was the lone area golfer to make the cut.

Chimacum's Chris Johnson leads with a 69.

1A girls

Royal led the charge with three players making the cut at North Bellingham Golf Course.

Allysa Presgraves and Shelby Forester each fired a 96 to finish the first day tied for ninth. Teammate Lacy Goroski is tied for 20th with Warden's Kim McPartland with a 105 score.

Kelli Bowers of Chelan is the leader with an 80.

1B/2B boys

Six area golfers are still alive at Lake Padden, led by DeSales' Kingmond Tang at 82 for seventh.

Others still playing today are Lind-Ritzville's Ian Fitch at 17th with an 88; Liberty Christian's Joel Hart and DeSales' Sean Williams tied at 29th with 91s; Liberty Christian's Kody Williams at 34th with a 93; and Collin Price of Tri-Cities Prep at 38th with a 94.

Craig Crawford of Highland Christian holds a three-stroke lead after a 74.

1B/2B girls

Madeleine Roach of DeSales sits in seventh place with a 95, and Anna Ghirardo of Tri-Cities Prep is 19th with a 109 at Lake Padden.

Kristin Rue of Life Christian easily leads the field with a first-round score of 78 -- 12 strokes ahead of her nearest rival.
