It looks like Puyallup Republican Bruce Dammeier wont be running unopposed for the open House seat being vacated by Rep. Joyce McDonald after all.
Puyallups Larry Pratt has jumped into the race as a member of the Progressive Party. Hes chosen to mini report, meaning he wont raise or spend more than $5,000.
Pratt was the driving force behind the partys Washington revival in 2003, though its likely most folks didnt notice. According to the party website, the Progressives put up a candidate for mayor of Seattle in 2005 but otherwise have been left to endorse other parties candidates.
Pratt is listed as one of five founding members of the Progressive Party of Washington, though you, too, can gain the title so long as you contribute at least $100 by 2013.

Cartoon raises question
Cartoon raises question
I'm writing in response to the editorial cartoon published on the Dec. 5 Opinion page. In it, Republican Party members were asked to identify their candidate for president. Five people said, "Not Romney," and then a cartoon of Mitt Romney announced he was officially changing his first name to "Not." That implies that no one wants Mr. Romney to run for president and that Mr. Romney is desperate to get the nomination.
That said, I would like to ask a question. Why not Romney? I've heard a number of arguments against him that make no sense to me. Because he's a Mormon. Because he's ultra-conservative, etc. But let's be honest, here. Can he really do any worse than any of the others who have sat in that office in the entire 200-plus years of United States' history? Really? I was just wondering.

Is there room for us to work in the center?
Is there room for us to work in the center?
As I write this, the stock market is falling like a rock on the first day of trading following the downgrading of our nation's credit rating by the Standard and Poor's rating service.
While you can question the credibility of the rating service and the role it played in the current Great Recession, it is hard to argue with the reasons given for the decision to lower our nation's credit rating for the first time in history.
"The downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges.
Free thinker
Free thinker
It is too bad that free thinking is out of fashion these days. Most politicos follow the party line rather than think for themselves. Whether it is the progressive Kool-Aid or the tea party Kool-Aid, it is still Kool-Aid. For instance, while I am pretty much a conservative, I don't toe the "conservative party" line. I will use entitlements as an example. Most conservatives vote a big "no" on entitlements. Unfortunately for them, they are huge beneficiaries of entitlements.
Many would argue they never took government handouts. Really? Here is a news flash, public education is a government entitlement. Sitting for 12 years in public school is a huge entitlement. And there is more -- public roads, the internet and most airports, for example.
Another area I don't toe the conservative party line is I don't buy the mantra that you need low taxes to grow the economy. Look at any chart of the economy and you will note that the economy grew hugely during Clinton's high tax years. Much more than in Reagan's years
