Eatonville Democrat Raymond Harper has filed paperwork to challenge Rep. Jim McCune, R-Graham, this fall.
Unfortunately, I dont have much more to say. There was a Raymond Harper who once sat on the Eatonville Town Council but Im unable to confirm its the same person in the few minutes Ive got to type this up.
McCune is finishing up his second term. He was narrowly elected in 2004 when he defeated Democrat Dennis Townsend with 52 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2006 with 56.5 percent of the vote over Democrat Jean Marie Christenson.
McCune has raised almost $37,000 for his campaign.

Quotes from the WA House debate on gay marriage
"With today's vote, we tell the nation that Washington state will no longer deny our citizens the opportunity to marry the person they love. We tell every child of same-sex couples that their family is every bit as equal and important as all other families in our state. And we take a major step toward completing a long and important journey to end discrimination based on sexual orientation." -Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Chemical depot contractor faces fine
A defense contractor has been fined more than $800,000 over the past 12 years while incinerating a stockpile of leftover Cold War chemical weapons stored at the Army's Umatilla Chemical Depot in northeastern Oregon.
The latest fines from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality were for lapses such as failing to inspect pollution control equipment before putting it back into operation. They amounted to $38,400, bringing the total to $853,600.
Department environmental law specialist Sarah Wheeler said none of the violations resulted in environmental or public health harm.

Umatilla Chemical Depot's mission success
HERMISTON -- Within a matter of days, the risk of a chemical weapons accident at the Umatilla Chemical Depot should be gone.
Sirens for a chemical weapons emergency will sound next week for their final monthly test in southern Benton, Umatilla and Morrow counties.
The household tone alert radios distributed for chemical weapons emergencies soon will be good only for weather warnings. All the home shelter-in-place emergency kits with rolls of plastic, duct tape and scissors won't be needed to seal up windows in case of a chemical weapons accident.

Experts look for silver lining in Depot closure
HERMISTON -- Closing the Umatilla Chemical Depot will have a widespread negative impact on the local economy but there is reason for hope, experts say.
The closure will take a $40 million to $50 million chunk out of the economy, said Bruce Sorte, an Oregon State University community economist, at a forum Wednesday night in Hermiston. That's based on the loss of 650 jobs.
Most depot employees make about $60,000 annually, he said, but the loss of one job likely will affect the economy by a factor of 1 1/2, making the economic impact of each job worth about $80,000.

With back-to-back premier events in the cross country world the next two weekends, different teams are using the big meets for different reasons.
For elite teams -- like the Kamiakin boys (ranked second in the state 3A) and girls (ranked third) -- it is a chance to pit themselves against the Northwest's best at Sunfair this Saturday at Franklin Park in Yakima and the Richland Invite the following weekend.
Likewise for the top individuals, with some of the best boys in the nation lining up for Kamiakin's Anthony Armstrong to challenge.
