| There's an old idea in Washington politics that a "Cascade Curtain" divides east from west. This blog tackles the political issues that matter to Eastern Washingtonians, from Congress on down to your local irrigation district. I’ll be covering the candidate forum for Richland City Council candidates at 6 p.m. tonight at the Richland Public Library.
I’m going to try live-blogging this event like I did the Cathy McMorris-Rodgers health care town hall a few weeks back. Space is always tight in the daily newspaper, but by live-blogging we can offer readers a more comprehensive look at these kind of meetings that provide information they need to make decisions as voters. I’m going to plan to live-blog any other candidate forums I cover leading up to the Nov. 3 general election.
Watch East of the Curtain starting at 6 p.m. for full coverage of the forum.
The forum also will be televised live on CityView Cable 13 in Richland and Charter Cable 12 in Kennewick.
There are two contested races in Richland this year.
>> Position 5 incumbent Rita Mazur, who has been on the council for 14 years, faces off against Phillip Lemley, a Bechtel Vit plant supervisor who serves on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission.
Lemley ran unsuccessfully against Councilwoman Sheila Sullivan in 2007.
>> Position 3 incumbent Sandra Kent is opposed by Creighton Knight. Kent was appointed to the council in February 2008 to fill the vacancy left by former Mayor Rob Welch when he resigned. She served on the Planning Commission for two years before being appointed to the council.
Council members John Fox, currently serving as mayor, David Rose and Bob Thompson also are up for re-election this year but are unopposed.
