Palin's Tri-City family mum on resignation

I was zoning out on the treadmill at the Tri-City Court Club over my lunch break, catching up on the latest shenanigans on long-running soap opera All My Children, when ABC broke in with some real-life daytime drama.

Alaska Governor and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced she’ll resign from the office effective later this month. She didn’t give a reason, but the blogosphere has exploded today with speculation that she has her eye on a 2012 presidential run.

We tracked down phone numbers for some of Palin’s local relatives — she has an uncle in Kennewick and an aunt in Richland — and Herald reporter Drew Foster called to see if they could shed any light on Palin’s seemingly sudden decision.

Palin’s uncle, Ron Jones, was pretty tight-lipped, although Foster described his phone demeanor as “friendly.”

Here’s how Foster summarized the conversation:

Palin’s uncle, Ron Jones, of Kennewick, said he received an e-mail from the Alaskan governor Friday morning saying she planned to resign later this month. Asked if she gave a reason for her decision in the e-mail, Jones said, “No comment on that one.”

Jones said he was surprised by his niece’s decision and said he “absolutely” did not see the announcement coming.
