There's an old idea in Washington politics that a "Cascade Curtain" divides east from west. This blog tackles the political issues that matter to Eastern Washingtonians, from Congress on down to your local irrigation district. The candidate from Idaho?

My week as the Herald’s political reporter has been consumed largely with keeping track of the hundreds of people throughout the Mid-Columbia who have decided to seek public office this year.

There are port districts, hospital districts, cemetery districts, school districts, city councils, and even a few state representative positions open even though this is an odd-numbered year.

It’s a lot of information to track and some of the names and places quickly start to blur together.

But I couldn’t help but notice one candidate in particular as I checked the candidate filings on the Secretary of State’s website before I headed home last night, bleary-eyed after a busy day.

Someone by the name of John (Jobs) Gotts, who prefers to call himself a Democrat, has filed to run against incumbent Rep. David Taylor, R-Moxee, in the state’s 15th Legislative District.

Gotts and his father, John W. Gotts, are the internet entrepreneurs behind the anti-spyware software sold on adware.com.

Gawker.com reports they bought wiki.com for nearly $3 million in 2006.

Gotts ran for 15th District state representative in 2008 and lost to incumbent Bruce Chandler, R-Granger. We reported at the time that Gotts lived in White Salmon.

I called Gotts to ask about the Idaho address.

He said he’s spending some time in Idaho on a research project, but lives in White Salmon and has for five years, although he may soon be moving to Union Gap.

Brian Zylstra, spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office, just confirmed that Gotts’ residential address is in White Salmon and he’s been registered to vote there since June 3, 2008.
