Tieton An elk hunter shot himself in the lower leg when he apparently slipped while walking in Yakima County Saturday evening, according to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
The 68-year-old man from Colfax was hunting a half mile east of Fish Creek Road south of Rimrock Lake.
His gun discharged when he slipped as he walked across slick, clay-type mud on uneven terrain, according to police reports.
He used a radio to call his hunting partners. Hunters in the area and emergency personnel carried him out on a litter to an Advanced Life Systems Ambulance.
He was transferred to a helicopter standing by at the Tieton emergency airstrip to be flown to a Yakima hospital.
The hunter’s name was not released Sunday.
