ACCIDENT: Hunter shoots self in Yakima County

An elk hunter shot himself in the lower leg when he apparently slipped while walking in Yakima County Saturday evening, according to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.

The 68-year-old man from Colfax was hunting a half mile east of Fish Creek Road south of Rimrock Lake.

His gun discharged when he slipped as he walked across slick, clay-type mud on uneven terrain, according to police reports.

He used a radio to call his hunting partners. Hunters in the area and emergency personnel carried him out on a litter to an Advanced Life Systems Ambulance.

He was transferred to a helicopter standing by at the Tieton emergency airstrip to be flown to a Yakima hospital.

The hunter’s name was not released Sunday.
