Track roundup: Southridge girls off to hot start (w/ photo gallery)

SPOKANE -- Chelsea Bourque could have contended for a state berth in the 300-meter hurdles.

But the Southridge junior gave up her spot in this weekend's Eastern Regional field for what she sees as the greater good -- a pair of 4A state relay titles.

The Suns took care of the first part of that dream Friday night at Spokane Falls CC, blowing away the field to win the 4x100 title in a state-leading and meet-record time of 48.10 seconds.

"We figured we had one last year to be a really, really good relay team, so let's stick to it," said Bourque, who didn't sacrifice all her individual hopes -- she is the top qualifier for today's 100 hurdles final.

"Our focus has always been on the 4x200, and the 4x100 was just kind of a bonus. But this year, our focus has been on both."

Richland's 4x100 finished third to join Southridge at next weekend's Star Track state meet in Tacoma.

In all, 14 4A entries and six 3A entries qualified for state at Day 1 of the regional meet, with Hanford senior Taymussa Miller winning 3A titles in the girls long and high jumps.

The meet resumes today with field events starting at 10:30 a.m. and the first track event -- the 4x200 finals -- at 11 a.m.

4A regionals

Bourque's relay teammate, senior Kasey McNeill, won the long jump with a best of 17 feet, 9 1/4 inches, leading a 1-2 finish for the Suns with senior Brittany Hill (17-3).

"To go 1-2 shows just how much we've improved," McNeill said. "Last year, me and Brittany were just looking to make it into finals. Our team is just real competitive. We don't want anything less than first."

Southridge picked up a third title in the boys 3,200, where senior Andrew Gonzales won his first regional title by outkicking Ferris' Adam Thorne to finish in 9:10.59.

"It's like I kind of had a flashback to all my other races," said Gonzales, who has battled leg injuries all spring. "I knew had a lot in me. I just had that rush, and it got me through."

Kamiakin junior Evan Fiske ran an 11-second personal-best to grab the third and final state berth in 9:24.20.

The girls 3,200 also produced a pair of Tri-City qualifiers as Pasco junior Marisa Vander Malle outdueled a pair of Richland runners for second place in 11:16.48, while Bombers junior Lauren Dernbach outkicked sophomore Emily Hazen for the final spot, finishing in 11:18.82.

Walla Walla senior Kenna Ross also posted a huge personal-best to win the girls javelin with a school-record 145-3 throw on her final attempt.

"It was a big surprise," said Ross, who was nursing a sore right shoulder all spring. "I've had a real inconsistent season, but that throw felt like a million bucks."

Richland senior Scott Christensen also fought through an injury -- he pulled a groin muscle at districts last week -- to win the boys discus with a personal-best 155-1 on his second throw in the finals.

"I did better than at districts, but I'm still having to play it safe," he said. "We'll see what happens at state."

Also qualifying for state in the boys were Kamiakin's 4x100 relay (third, 42.78) and Moses Lake senior Randy Koon in the long jump (second, 21-1), and Kamiakin senior Elise Jepsen (second, high jump, 5-2) and Richland senior Ashley Willoughby (third, shot, 36-10 3/4) in the girls.

3A regionals

Miller, the defending state champion in the high jump, led a contingent of three Falcons to qualify by winning with a jump of 5-5. Teammates Veronica Bradley and Melissa Merrill both made the state standard of 5-1 1/2.

Miller said she felt no pressure just because she won state a year ago.

"It wasn't even in my mind," she said. "But this is my No. 1 event, and that made me think, 'I'd better not screw it up.' "

The long jump has always been a distant third in Miller's repertoire before this season, but she went 16-10 1/2 on her third jump of the prelims to win the title.

"I just do it to have a third event, but now it's becoming one of my favorites," she said.

Hanford senior Haley Tank (javelin) and sophomore Erin Hegarty (3,200) both finished second in their events to qualify.

Tank made amends for a year ago, when she admittedly "choked" at regionals. She threw 133-5 on her third throw of prelims to complete a series of three throws that bettered the state standard.

"This definitely makes up for last year," she said. "Once I found out that I'd qualified, I just relaxed and let it all go on the next throw."

Hegarty stayed on Shadle Park's Andrea Nelson's heels the entire race and breezed to state for a second straight year in 11:26.36.

"That was kind of the plan," Hegarty said. "I was just hoping to make it back to state."
