Southridge star Gonzales signs with WSU track

PULLMAN -- Andrew Gonzales, an outstanding prep distance runner from Southridge, has signed a national letter of Intent to compete in cross country and track and field for Washington State University starting in the fall of 2009, Cougars head coach Rick Sloan announced Monday.

Gonzales won the 2008 Sunfair Invite, Columbia Basin Big Nine Conference and the 4A Regional cross country meets. He took fourth place at the 2008 state 4A and 2007 state 3A cross country championships, and also placed fourth at the 2008 Oregon-Washington BorderClash Cross Country meet.

Gonzales carries a 3.93 grade point average, which ranks 10th among his class of 325 students, and he plans to pursue a pre-med curriculum at WSU.

"I am very excited to have Andrew at Washington State," Cougar cross country head coach Jason Drake said. "He is one of the finest distance athletes in the state and I think he has only begun to scratch the surface of his talent. He will help take our distance program to another level."
