BATTLE GROUND -- The men's and women's teams from Community Colleges of Spokane swept the NWAACC cross country championships held in Battle Ground on Saturday.
Leading the way in the men's race for Spokane were Royal High graduates and brothers, Rigoberto and Humberto Jimenez, who finished 1-2 respectively in the 8K race.
Rigoberto won the title in 25:50, while Humberto finished in 25:56.
The Sasquatch had all five scorers in the top 12 for a team score of 32 and the team title.
In the women's race, Whatcom's Laura Carlyle finished first, completing the 5k course in 18:50.
Spokane's Britnee Sanchez, a Grandview native, was second at 19:00.
The Sasquatch women placed five runners in the top 10 to win the women's team competition with 34 points.
Puzey places 30th
Hermiston grad Thomas Puzey, running for BYU-Hawaii, placed 30th overall at the NCAA Division II West Regionals at the UC San Diego Campus Course.
Puzey ran the 10K course in 34 minutes, 46.8 seconds.
Women's soccer: WWU clinches GNAC title
Hanford High graduate Kasey Hostetler had an assist to help Western Washington defeat Western Oregon 4-1 to clinch the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.
The Vikings finished the regular season with a 16-2-2 record and earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Far West Regional and will play host to a second-round match on Nov. 16.
Southridge's Bakker helps Memphis advance
The University of Memphis defeated Central Florida 2-0 in the Conference USA tournament semifinals in Houston.
Southridge graduate Kelsey Bakker starts for Memphis on defense.
Memphis (14-4-2) will play East Carolina (14-3-4) today for the C-USA title and the automatic NCAA tournament berth that goes with it.
Men's basketball: EWU 90, UPS 66
Benny Valentine had game-high totals in points (21), assists (5) and steals (3) to lead Eastern Washington over the University of Puget Sound in an exhibition game in Cheney.
Teammate Mark Dunn added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Women's basketball
Gonzaga 94, Concordia 32
SPOKANE -- Freshman Kelly Bowen led six Gonzaga University players in double figures with a game-high 17 points to help lead the Bulldogs to an easy victory over Concordia University in an exhibition game at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The game was never in doubt for the Bulldogs as they built a double-digit lead only three minutes into the contest.
Gonzaga, who held the 51-14 halftime advantage, forced Concordia to turn the ball over 24 times in the opening half, 10 more turnovers than the Cavaliers had points.
The Bulldogs, making 16 steals, including five by junior Vivian Frieson, scored 28 points off CU's miscues.
Freshman Kayla Standish scored six points, had three rebounds, blocked one shot and made two steals in 10 minutes of action, while sophomore Claire Raap, also playing 10 minutes, scored six points, brought down two boards and had one steal for GU in the second half.
Raap is a Prosser High graduate.
Volleyball: EWU sweeps Northern Colorado
The Big Sky Conference race just got really interesting. Eastern Washington defeated Northern Colorado in convincing fashion 25-12, 25-17, 25-18 to move into second place and set up a showdown at Portland State in seven days with first place on the line.
The win allowed the Eagles to move past Northern Colorado into second place in the league standings with a 10-4 Big Sky mark, 15-10 overall.
The Bears fell to third place at 9-4 in league play, 15-7 overall.
Men's soccer: Western beats Seattle Pacific
BELLINGHAM -- Freshmen midfielders Tyler Bjork and Oscar Jimenez each scored a goal and assisted on another as Western Washington closed out its season with a 3-0 victory over Seattle Pacific University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.
Kamiakin grad Matt Pele had an assist for the Vikings, posting an 11-5-3 overall record and capturing the GNAC championship at 7-1-0.
