Richland grad Miller pitches WSU past UW

From Herald news services

SEATTLE -- Left-hander Jayson Miller, a senior from Richland, came one out short of throwing a complete-game shutout and led Washington State to a 5-1 victory over Washington on Saturday at Husky Ballpark.

The Cougars evened the Apple Cup series at one win apiece.

The Huskies (30-17 overall and 9-8 in the Pac-10) had a five-game winning streak broken and dropped into fourth in the conference standings with the loss.

Washington State improved to 27-21 overall and 6-11 in league play.

Miller improved to 7-1 for the season with the second complete game of his career. He didn't allow a Husky to reach third base until the bottom of the ninth and finished with nine strikeouts.

UW starting pitcher Cam Nobles (4-4) suffered the loss.

Cougar first baseman Jim Murphy had three RBI, two coming off his 13th HR of the season.

Richland grad Tyler Cheney entered the game in the ninth inning to pitch for Washington.

The series concludes today with a 1 p.m. start.

Husky left-hander Nick Haughian is scheduled to duel Cougar right-hander Chad Arnold.
