Let's talk movies. There aren't a lot of good ones out there at the moment.
Kristen Kreuk as Street Fighter's beloved Chun-Li? She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag on Smallville, so I wasn't expecting much out of her in this film. The only reason I'd want to see this is for Taboo's appearance as Vega. I had the hugest crush on him when I was younger - mask, spikes 'n all.
I've resulted to looking online for my movies. If you go to mysoju.com, you can stream a lot of popular Asian films. Granted, they're cut up into 15-minute segments, but if you have a relatively decent Internet connection, you should be just fine.
The new Transformer movie looks decent. You have to admit the special effects are grade-A, even if you didn't like the real-life movie. It's a Hollywood film, not some indie masterpiece, so get over it.
The one film I'm looking forward to is the Wachowski brothers' Ninja Assassin starring my favorite South Korean pop star, Rain.
I'm scared the movie will be a disaster, or fall under another western-made-ninja-movie where the Asian guy knows kung-fu (as always) and rescues the white chick. Rain, fully committed to the role as Raizo, will no doubt be perfection as that character, but the surrounding elements that are out of the Wachowski brothers' hands is what makes me fearful. Even though it seems the only Hollywood films Asians are cast as the main lead are in martial art movies, it's still huge for Asians, especially Koreans, since Rain has this huge part.
One film I wasn't excited about was The Uninvited, an American remake of the Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters. I'm rarely a fan of remakes, especially when they cross cultures. Obviously some things are going to be tweaked in order to make sense...which unfortunately, don't most of the time.
Another one I probably won't be thrilled to see is New Line Cinema's remake to the 2007 Korean film Hansel and Gretel in 2011. The film, based on the children's fable, is intriguingly dark. The subtle cues that something is not right in the film will pull you into the story, so much to the point where you fear going out into the woods alone.
If all else fails, there's always YouTube to keep me entertained. Take Simon's Cat, for instance. One of the cutest animation I have ever seen:
